Sport heritage with its wide body, but built for touring comfort rather than out-and-out speed.

The Porsche 964 offers a great platform from which to build a classic Porsche interpretation. Many people have undertaken backdate projects using the impact bumper 930s. Whilst an easier conversion, they are prone to corrosion and do not enjoy many of the refinements of the 964.

Whilst I already owned a 1990 964 Carrera 2, it was far too good to invest in a backdate project. So in mid-2011, having spent 18 months thinking through and planning the project, I embarked on a serious search for a donor vehicle. I spent many a weekend trawling the web for a donor.

I wanted a Carrera 2 rather than a 4, I didn’t want the complexity of 4 wheel drive and wanted to keep the authenticity of all the power from the rear. Manual obviously, and a car that hadn’t clocked up too many miles and itself hadn’t been heavily modified.

In January 2012, I spotted a perfect example about 250 miles from home. After a short phone call to secure the car with a deposit, I made arrangements to view the car. Its owner was an elderly Doctor who had left the car laid up for a couple of years, but apart from that it was in good health, drove well and largely unmolested except for an upgrade to Cup mirrors and Cup 3 alloys. At 77,000 miles on the clock it was in good form, a fully stamped service record by Porsche Main Dealer and Specialist and a more supple drive than my existing lower mileage 964.
